Dear Brother John

Your letter was received yesterday, also the package of books, David brought them from the Express Office and it was opened at once, each one received there book excepting Celia, her one I will send off to her to-day. I send you many thanks for mine, which I know to be excellent. I shall prize it the more because it is from you, and has your handwriting inside. I am glad that you all are usually well again. I had a letter from Helen written Decr 18, which was gladly received, with the news of herself and surroundings. It is a comfort to know that she is getting well and strong again after her severe illness. It is a new experience for her to be living in a country where there are no flowers during the winter.
One of the Christmas gifts Celia sent me was a quotation from one of your articles which has been gotten up in very pretty

[in margin: I have just received a letter from [Anna?] Sanderson, John [Olnay?] and wife think of coming to Calif. again, Mrs. [illegible] has been sick so they may not start until yet.]

lettering, with ornamental border around it, and framed. It is when you say "Climb the mountains and get their good tidings nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees." and so on to where "cares will drop off like autumn leaves" then your name. I have not seen any thing of yours brought out like this before, but it is fine.
We still find it a never failing pleasure to look out on the Bay, and go down on the beach sometimes. there is so much to see that is wonderful and beautiful. I so wish Maggie was able to come for a while.
David and Ette are enjoying the change, the two lots they have bought one on the same side of the street as ours, just two lots between us.
I am supposing you will still be at Martinez and will send this letter there. I wrote to Wanda the end of last month. May this New Year hold much of happiness for you and yours.

Affectionately Sarah.
