My dear John Muir

It was only this morning that our friend Murdoch (whom I had not seen for six weeks) told me of your sad loss - you must have thought me very callous never to have sent you even a card of sympathy. This is a terrible bereavement for you & your daughters but I trust you have strength to bear it.

and there is the comfort of knowing that the separation from those dearest was it only temporary.
Pray pardon this bold intrusion of my sympathy for you & believe me

Yours faithfully
