Dear Sir;-
I send you, in this mail, copies of the July and August issues of The Pacific Monthly, and take the liberty to address you this letter, A number of manuscripts and many illustrations which I have gathered together have gone in for the making of a special Southern California number which will appear in September and I will see that you get a copy of that also.
It is now my'purpose to ask the Manager, Mr, Wells, to endorse a plan to make of the December or January issue (preferably the December issue) a special Southern California Out Door Life mumber- a magazine which will properly set forth and make clear the peculiar charm of life in California. If Mr. Wells puts the stamp of his approval upon this plan and leaves it to me to carry out, I wish to make that number of the magazine the best in every way that has been published.In short to make it the best issue of a ny coast magazine ever printed.
This can only be done of course by securing articles from pens like yours- or I will harldy say like yours as there are no others like yours in the state;'but from the very best of our California and Western writers. On that account I address you and ask if you have something already written, or if not,if you would undertake to write for us something which will help us in this plan to reflect true, rich feeling of life in Southern California?
I ask this question with fear and trembling knowing as I" do that The Pacific Monthly, or any other coast magazine, cannot pay the price that Eastern publications can for your writings.
But I am going to put that matter in your hands and ask you to name a price, the lowest price at which everything considered, you can and will write an article'for, along the lines mentioned, and have it ready by October 15th.
I am writing'Mrs, Austin, William E. Smythe and others, by this same mail.
I hope your answer will be favorable. I am an admirer of yours to an extent that I cannot express, having read all that you have written for some years, and [illegible] it is my great wish and sincere desire and hope that you may favorably consider this matter.
