[First draft of letter, in note-book]

Martinez, March 6, '05.

Mr. Alexander B. Thaw,
New York.

Dear Sir:

I thank you for a copy of your Inaugural Ode you so kindly sent me. I have not yet found time to give it a careful reading. No doubt you have greatly enjoyed your work. It is a glorious subject, and judging from the few pages I have had time to read I shall find in it many fine thoughts.
With best wishes, and hoping to meet you ere long, I am,

Faithfully yours,
[John Muir]

I thank you for your kind letter and also your little book "An Inaugural Ode" which has just arrived. I have not yet had time to give it the careful reading it requires. The subject is a grand one, and doubtless you have greatly enjoyed it.

Faithfully yours,
