Dear Mr. H[errin]:
Many thanks for your Sacramento Yosemite work, now happily consummated, the best California thing ever done for the mountains and the world, carrying blessings for everybody, and covering a multitude of real or Imaginary railroad sins.
Up there, as doubtless you well know, the S. [P.] double R. Co is regarded as the great power (at times benign) behind the awful Sacramento throne. Sacramento 1 What a name for the place so beset with scrawny political thorns and briers and poison oak, while boodle, boddle doubles, trebles all the troubles of the good men or good angels who may change to be there.
Vow, thank Heaven, I'm out of it. My political education commenced a month or two ago and is now complete in all its branches. What caused the Sx[aminer] to make so costly and venomous an effort to defeat a measure that practically all California and indeed all the country wanted, I am at a loss to explain. Daring all the long years I have been working for right Yosemite management until now it has been on my side.
Again thanking and congratulating you, I am, with best wishes to all your family and all your R.R. wheels.
