[First draft of letter, in note-book]

Martinez. Jan. 30. '05.

Mr. R. B. Marshall.

Dear Mr. Marshall:

The President has already refused to allow any portion of the Yosemite National Park to be invaded by railroads. so I don't like to bother him with anything on the subject until I fully understand the difficulty in Congress. But I have written to a friend who keeps close watch of such affairs to keep me posted. and use his influence to prevent legislation which might become a dangerous precedent.
Hoping to see you soon. and thanking you for your kind invitation.

Faithfully yours,

[John Muir]
