ARNOLD ARBORETUM.

HARVARD UNIVERSITY.

Jamaica Plain, Mass., April 30, 1896

My dear Mr. Muir:

I am exceedingly obliged your fox your letter of the 23rd and the information about General Bidweil and his crossing the Sierras which I will certainly refer to in The Silva.
By all means, if yoa jo to Alaska, look oat Tor the distribution for all Pines, Firs and Spruces, and gather for me if possible athigh elevations and, remote points as specimens as you can inorder to show distribution. I hope too you will be able to make notes on the distribution size, uses, etc., of all these trees in Alaska as I shall be prevented from visiting that country before the completion of The Silva, and you can help me enormously by gathering such facts.
Perhaps you may feel like writing for Garden and Forest some account of the Alaska trees and forests. This you can do in a most instructive way, being able to compare them with the more valuable forests further south. In any case, whether your notes are ever written out or not, I hope you will make them as full as possible for my benefit.
With kind regards, I am,

always faithfully yours,
