My dear brother John:
Several days have been allowed to pass since your letter with its important contents was received. But the truth is, I have scarcely felt equal to the expression of my feelings to you.
The experiences of the past few years have been so overwhelming that sometimes I feel too confused to understand my own feelings. But one thing I do know -- that no twenty-five dollars ever was more welcome. Surely the Father Himself must have inclined you to the kind act. Yet I cannot deny that there is a good deal of sadness mixed with my gratitude.
What is to be the end of all this -- I cannot tell. But I am determined to trust to the end, for if I were to give up my confidence that "all things will work together for good" and that all will end aright, I would give up all heart and cease to try to make the best of what I have.
Pray for me, my brother, and believe me,
Gratefully yours,
Joanna M[uir] Brown
I believe I will enclose one of Walter's letters, so you can see about how he feels.
