Dear Mrs. Jones:
Your article hard to make good for the magazines will be better suited, perhaps, for the weekly papers.
Owing to close and severe competition, the magazine editors are becoming more and more exacting. No cause for discouragement, etc.

Dear Mr. Nicholson:
Many, many thanks for Hooker's Himalayan journals, and to think of its being your own copy! I can never repay you. The precious book came just a day or two ago, and I have already finished the first reading, and it made me want to go right straight back again. I think I would if you would go with me. I have not heard from you since I got home about the 1st of June. I then found your two letters awaiting, dated Nov. 13th, '03, and March 2, '04. In the last you said you hoped to go to Switzerland. I hope you did, and returned with health renewed.
I wrote to you soon after l got home, acknowledging receipt of Hooker's life of his father and Leslie Stephens capital mountaineering book; and I think sent you one or both of my books. Did you get the one called "Our National Parks?" If not let me know and I'll send a copy, and any other American books you want.
I've had several letters from Sargent. He is hard at work on the Crataegus tail of his Silva which is already about as long as the body of the book. I'm now at work on a little Yo[semite] book I hope to get off my hands before next spring. Then you must come and see me, and I'll take you to the biggest trees and most hospitable mountains in the world. Hoping to hear from you soon, and thanking you again and again, I am,

.Dear Mr. H[ercus].
Perhaps you will be able to recall our meeting on the S.S. Peninsula when you gave me a lot of kind and useful information about NLew] z[ealand]. I think I then promised to send you a book, but my trip lasted so much longer than I thought it would, I fear your address may be changed. Please inform me as to this.
My trip to N[ew] Z[ealand] was delightful in both islands, and lasted about 2 mos. Hoping to hear from you ere long, I am, with thanks and best wishes.
