Dear Mr Secor:
I have just received your letter dated August 12th 1903. When it was written I was in Manchuria & it followed me round the world without overtaking me until yesterday From Shanghai it was sent to Pekin & forwarded from there by the U.S. Legation. It is a very kind letter & I sincerely thank you for it & for the handsome set of spoons which I think were acknowledged by my daughter The picture too is charming in which you are sketching on a beautiful stream bank.
[marginalia]
How greatly you would enjoy the scenery of some of our California mountains.
I was away more than a year from home & on the whole had a glorious time. Some day I hope to be able to tell you some of it. In the meantime I am Faithfully Yours
