Dear Merriams and Baileys

Happy New Year and best wishes of every kind. I forgot in these new wildernesses to send order for a few California fruits but hope Helen may have thought of it. My, what a trip I've had and am having since going to Yosemite last May with the President, through Russia, Siberia, the Crimea, Caucasus, Manchuria, India, Egypt, Ceylon, Eucalyptic Australia. The ferny Eucalyptus forests are fairly glorious, not to mention the Aurucari forests of Queensland. On the 11th I go to New Zealand, returning by Tasmania. Then home by way of Java, New Guinea, Yokohama, etc. Have been alone most of time and often wished for your companionship. Left the Sargents at Shanghai. The President gave me the kindest letters possible. So did Harriman, though overwhelmed with sickness and trouble. Camping with the President was a memorable experience. I fairly fell in love with him.
Remember me to your uncle and all the H.A.E. friends and believe me

Ever yours,
