My dear General

When you gave me that grand round Shasta excursion with Hooker & Gray you told me I think in a talk by the campfire that you saw some of the Sequoias in crossing the Sierra in 1846. If so will you give me particulars in writing for publication in the Silva of N. American of Prof Sargent. He is very anxious to get the name of the white man who first looked upon Sequoia gigantia to be preserved in the Silva. Nine of the twelve superb volumes of this work are published I suppose you have them.
I mean to go to Alaska soon to explore some of the plains about Mt. St. Elias & Cooks Inlet etc. With warm regards to Mrs. Bidwell, I am General ever faithfully Yours,

John Muir
