My dear Cousin,
Until within a week or two I had hoped to see you & Maggie at the old home. Now on account of lost passports etc I'll have to wait at least a year before I can make my

Dunbar visit.
I am traveling with two companions, Prof Sargent & his son of Boston, which leaves me less free than I would be alone- to say nothing of the complications resulting from our unfortunate loss of passports.
We expect to leave London tomorrow for Paris, & in about a week start for St Petersburgh making short stops at a few

of the principal cities by the way. Thence through the Cancasns by way of the Crimea Tiffl[illegible] [Baker?] etc. to the main line of the Trans Siberian railway at Moscow thence across Asia to Pekin, thence to Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore Jara etc & home by way of San Francisco. A long weary road but we hope to learn something of plants animals rocks etc to make our labor light & seas & continents narrow Hoping this will be a good year for you & Maggie & wishing to be remembered to Susan Gilroy & Jane Mather & other friends I am ever affectionately your cousin John Muir
