Dear wife Louie - I left the President here last evening at 8.15 & after a good long sleep am feeling much better than when I started on the grand trip & am ready for the Santa Fe [due?] at 1.40 P.M.
I had a perfectly glorious time with the President & the mountains. The first night we camped beneath the Mariposa Sequoias he & I alone, except 3 - cook & packers, Next night in the Silver firs near

Glacier Point while a hearty little snow storm was blowing after a hard days ride horseback, & on foot through deep snow sheets & patches. Next morning we spent an hour on Glacier Point, every thing bright & glorious after the storm, then rode round the Illilonette to head of Nevada Fall, thence to head of Little Yosemite thence down past Vernal

to the Valley, stopped a few minutes with the crowd at the front of hotel then rode down the valley & camped on the side of the Bridal Veil Meadow as p[illegible]ly & undisturbed as where back of Glacier Point. In the morning joined the party on stage & reached Raymond before 6 o'clock. I never before had so interesting hearty & manly a companion. I also greatly enjoyed

Dr Butler of Columbia, Sec. Moody, governor Par[illegible]er, & Sir L[illegible], whose acquaintance I made on the stages & train. Pres Wheeler also I like more & more.
When I told the President that Helen was seated near him at Berkeley He said Oh if I had only known that John Muir's daughter was so near me!
