Martinez. March 30, 1903.

My dear Dr. Merriam:-

Many thanks for the magnificent lot of pictures. I feel conscience-stricken when 1 see how many I had marked.
Hurrah for your California visit, and the grand bird gang you are bringing with you! Helen says that your excursion, awfully, personally conducted in Pullmans, will make the Sierra Club Outings look silly.
I am going on a long trip with Sargent through Russia, Manchuria, Japan and perhaps Java and Manila. I start from here May 14th for a short run into Yosemite with a friend of yours, and hope to see John Burroughs. And on the 18th start east. I only wish that I could have been at home to have a good long visit with Burroughs. I suppose it is barely possible that I may meet you before I leave. Anyhow Wanda and' Helen and Mrs. Muir expect you all here at the house for a good visit.
Helen says that she doesn't think it is possible that any girl can be more "prematurely antiquated" than Zenaida, but Helen will tell her own story in another letter.
With love to you all,

Faithfully yours,

JOHN MUIR
