My dear Mr Wheeler:
I am sorry to say in reply to your kind letter that an engagement made last month will prevent my going to Yosemite with the President. I must be in Boston May 15th, & a few days later sail for Europe. Fortunately with Mr Le Conte, Keith & other Sierra Club Mountaineers as guides I'll not be missed.
