Dear Mr Rowell
I see by the newspaper that the President's little raid into Yosemite is to be made after the middle of May. I shall not there for be able to join in it, I am very sorry to say, for according to an engagement made before I learned the President's wish that I should accompany him, & to which I referred in my first letter to you, I must be in Boston May 15th & sail for Europe a few days later.
Please convey my regrets to the President, & the

I am very sorry to say that I shall not be able to be with you [illegible] I see by the newspaper that the President [illegible] leave S.F. on the 14th of May, & by that time I must be in Boston & a few days later sail for Europe - Will you kindly convey my regrets to the Pres & say that I hope to see him some time in the Sierra when he has more [leisure?].
