[First draft of letter,in note-book]

[J.Rennie]

[January,1903].

To Mr.Rennie:

Thanks for the book [which] come the other day. I have been looking it over, and was much interested in the Himalaya chapters. I have often wondered whether I would ever see these highest of earth's mountains.
When you come to America you must come to our house. The Selkirk and Rockies are not very high or very beautiful, on account of being made of sedimentary rocks [they] have a ruinous, crumbling, fragmentary look, but abound in sheer or nearly sheer cliffs with plenty of scope for mountaineers' pluck, caution and skill.
I still hope to take a run around the world, mostly to see mountains, rocks, ice and trees, and either coming or going will be glad to see you all again.
I'm trying to write another little book, and would like to finish it before I start, so I may not get off this year. Hoping in the meantime to see you here, I am, with best wishes for the New Year to your father and mother,

Sincerely,

[John Muir]
