Dear Mr [Muir?],
I understand that [Mrs Butler?] has written to you, making a request of you. I do not know what she said in her letter, but I have a [illegible] fear that she does not make it clear how important to us all her [illegible]ing is, and how much she needs help. She has charge of the [illegible] of the California flora,

and she has done much and excellent work not only in drawing the flowers in their habitat, but in [gathering?] the plants and seeds with the purpose of making a [field?] of flowers around the California Building. She cannot carry out the well-derived plan for this without help, and she has found it very difficult to [interest?] the [illegible] in it, so she has appealed to some of the ladies of the Century Club.

They will do what they can, and have set apart an afternoon in which Mrs Butler’s drawings will be shown and her plan unfolded, but they much need help in the way of informal talk from one having knowledge and enthusiasm in the matter of our wild-flowers, and no one has these as you have.
