My dear Muir:
I am glad you are going to Cook's Inlet if you want to go but I wish you had a more sympathetic and lively crowd of companions; still if you get them on a small ship you will be able to do a good deal of talking without allowing them a chance for escape.
Canby and I had a pleasant time but hard to work and hot weather. We saw oceans of lovely flowers and every day regretted that you were not with us.
I understand from your letter that you will be back by the 1st of August. This I hope is true, for we must make some sort of a trip this autumn, meeting perhaps at El Paso, for Mexico, Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee, Georgia, etc. At any rate let me know when you are to be back and if you would like to put in four or five weeks at tree-hunting this autumn. I feel now that it will not be necessary for me to go across the Rocky Mountains this year, but there is still a good deal of work to do at the south.
