Professor 0. Hart Merriam

Dear Sir:

I thank the "wealthy New Yorker" and you for inviting me to join a scientific party in an excursion to Cookes Inlet and Kodiak. This is the only part of tho H.W. coast I have not visited and I am strongly tempted to accept so flattering and advantageous an invitation at once. But I am partly engaged to lead a party into the Yosemite region in May and I cannot at this time be sure that I could be ready to join you at Seattle the last week of May. Besides I could hardly say positively that I could join he expedition without hearing directly from the leader. Anyhow I assure you that after travelling so long alone I would be very glad to see this interesting icy region with so many companions able to teach me so much that I am eager to learn. Hoping to meat you era long I am

Very truly yours,

JOHN MUIR
