My dear Mr Kip,
I reached home three days agao, & your kind note of the 9th of last month written when I was on my way to Florida reached me today. I should have been delighted to have visited you this summer but my trip has been all given to the forests & it seemed impossible to see one in ten on a score of the friends I wanted to visit I hope the fates will be better to one next time. A sketch of my trip as a whole will show you how sternly I have been driven, Left home Sep 7th by the Oregon railroad to Portland, thence to Spokane & around to Duluth by the great Northern. Then down the lakes by steam to Buffalo thence to Boston, Next day to Cape Cod. Then back to Boston & off to the Alleghany forests with Prof. Sargent & Mr Canby of Wilmington, Del. through N. Carolina, Georgia,
[in margin: Im writing on forests with reference to their preservation - am writing book about them. See articles in Atlantic monthly for Nov. & Dec. & earlier numbers.]
Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky & Delaware & back to Boston. Next day after arrival off to Montreal by Albany & Lake George down by Lake Champlain, Burlington, the Green Mtns, Smugglers Notch, White Mtns, Portland, Maine. Thence to Bangor & up by Moosehead Lake to Quebec. Thence back to Boston, - to New York up the Hudson - spent a few days in the hills about Wing & Wing when we talked over our Alaska trip & in which you were not forgotten. Thence into the Berkshire Hills with Gilder thence to Wilmington, Baltimore, & Washington, driving out eight or ten miles at each of these places to see the park & woods. Thence to St Augustine, Miami, Key West, Marquesas Keys, Palatka, Gainesville, Cedar Keys, Live Oak etc. Thence to Mobile to get a glimpse for a few days of the grand magnolia forests there & thence home by New Orleans. You will see that this was a tree trip & does not count on friends visits But I devoutly hope next will be better Remember me to the boys & believe me
Ever Cordially Yours
