July 22, 1897,
My dear Dr Muir:
I am not stopping here but the hotel kindly loans me the use of its writing room, I leave on the "Excelsior" as special correspondent for the New York Herald to do up the Yukon & may be gone a year. You can give me a lot of good advice & I want to know if you are coming down this week. If so telegraph or write her to 1300 Leavenworth St. S F.
I get good pay but would give it all up to insure doing good work and so I want your advice.
Yours very sincerely
