Mr. John Muir,
Martinez, Cal.
My Dear Mr. Muir:-
Since my return I have seen Mr. Melick, and he assures me that the Oak tree I mentioned while with you is fully fifteen feet in diameter; that he measured its circumference six feet from the ground, and found it to be forty-nine feet. There are many oaks about there he says that are nearly as large, but does not know the variety or species. Don't you think I had better go up and measure the trees accurately, photograph them, and collect acorns and sprays of the foliage to send to you and Mr. Sargent. Do you think Mr. Sargent would consider it worth while to pay my actual expenses, which would be not to exceed $15.00. Of course I would gladly give my time .and the pictures. In that case, I could go at once, and perhaps find something else of interest for you.
With kindest regards to all I am,
Yours very truly,
[illegible]
