John Muir Esq.
Martinez , Cal.
Dear Sir:- About 20,000 people are coming to California with, the Christian Endeavor Association and the State Board of Trade wants to present then with a "[Huide] to California". The object of the guide will be to answer the questions which naturally arise to the mind of a stranger in a strange land concerning the country he is visiting. We want about four pages relating to the geological formation and the scenery of California, under the title "Geological and Scenic California", or some such title. Every department of the little book is to be complete. It is to be illustrated and printed with illuminated headings. It is to be made very attractive and the name of the contributor is to be given. Can we depend upon you for about four pages relating to the geological formation of this coast; its geological formation with reference to other portions of the United States; also a brief review of the character of California scenery? The bare suggestion to you is sufficient to enable you to understand exactly what we want. .Every one of us who will contribute to this will have in view simply the advantage to the State, and I know I may appeal to your local patriotism for assistance in this matter. Your early answer will very greatly oblige,
Your very truly,
