ARNOLD ARBORETUM,
HARVARD UNIVERSITY.

Jamaica Plain, Mass., March 12, 1897.

My dear Muir:

I have yours of March 6th with enclosure from the [Examiner?] I don't know as there is anything new to say, the reservations being exactly in tae position they were before the Senate amendment was passed. I am disappointed, however, that there has not been more talk in the California papers on this subject and that you have not been interviewed concerning the reservations and the work of the Commission. As I have already written you more than once, we must get western support or the thing will go up. I had supposed that as soon as the reservations were announced you would be interviewed and have an opportunity to discuss the situation at length, and these interviews I wanted to use in eastern papers to show that there was somebody in the west interested in forest preservation. Now it appears as if the east was trying to impose on the west and to get its land away. The situation I feel is very grave and we need help.

Faithfully your,

C. S. Sargent
