Judge Joseph McKenna,

Dear Sir:

It was evident last evening that our friend Mr. John Muir was full of the subject nearest his heart, for you were there, and it reminded him that much of the good work done of late years, in the matter of preserving portions of our wonderful mountain countries for public parks, has been done by the last three successive Secretaries of the Interior - General Noble, Hoke Smith and Mr. Francis. Mr. Muir has largely been instrumental in suggesting the lines along which so much has already been done. He is now specially interested in the matter of carrying out the suggestions of the Forestry Commission, a body of eminent men appointed during Hoke Smith's administration, and which have lately been diligently at work, and are about ready to report.
I take the liberty of sending you herewith a copy of the Sierra Club Bulletin for January 1896, which contains an address of Mr. Muir's. Begin at page 272 and see if my statement that he is a poet is not justified.

Truly yours,

WARREN OLNEY
