DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR
Washington, October 7, 1892.
Mr. R. U. Johnson,
Assistant Editor Century Magazine,
Union Square, New York.
My dear Mr. Johnson:
I send you a copy of a letter just received from Special Inspector Weigel, in regard to the spoliation of the Yosemite Park now under control of the State of California. There was an effort made at the last session of Congress to put me in funds to make this investigation more thorough but it failed, and I am now working on the information I get through the officers of the land department. As you perceive, I expect a further report. I am sure things are managed there poorly, but I have no control over the State, and our only remedy would be to forfeit the grant to the State because they have not complied with the conditions.
You will remember I made a report to Congress on this subject some time ago. I will recur to the matter in my annual report, due the latter part of November.
Very respectfully,
John W. Noble.
