VICTORIA, October 21st 1897

Dear Mr Muir

I am in receipt of your letter of the 16th Instant and note you had received my last report. You will see some glaring evidences of ignorance in going through the work for which I am not responsible, notably Distribution of Trees "page 1137 which is of course rubbish, it was put in without my authority, as well as other matter which you may not notice.
I have been placed in receipt of your work "Mountains of California" which was sent to me by Mr Canby and which I am reading with much interest and pleasure, allow me, if it is not too late to congratulate you on it.
I have heard from Professor Sargent who I am glad
