My dear husband,
Your letters of June 17 from Victoria, did not reach here until June 29, having come by way of Fort Wrangel, while I worried fearing you might be on the way to Mount St. Elias. The children were very happy over their own little letters, and talked and planned for many wonderful journeys with you to see the blue waves and foam bubbles, and the great whales, and the white birds diving, and the beautiful glaciers; but Helen seemed to fear that mama would not be able to go so far, and climbed up to put her arms around

my neck and kiss and pet me, and then - went to sucking her thumb! It seems almost impossible to leave her for more than a day, she is always so uneasy and watchful of me while you are away. Grandma cannot manage her, and is herself barely able to go about the house. I could not go to San Francisco, and so Dr. Moore is attending to my teeth, had an awful time, the abscess proved to be at the root of the little eyetooth which was partly worn away. Now my head is easy and my eyes are much better. Have just received a letter from Aunt Margaret Reid, a very beautiful one, but not very hopeful.

little wonder, poor woman, still those same hot winds, the thermometer 100[degree symbol], 106[degree symbol] & 109[degree symbol]! "grain had to be cut for fodder, ect." I will write to her tomorrow, and tell her of the cool winds and green shade trees of California. She had been reading the old letters you wrote to her from college, Canada, & Yosemite Valley, and was comforted thereby. Helen & Wanda sent long letters to Aunt Annie. I cannot understand what shape will be your article in the September Century, they have not sent any more of it. The S.F. Bulletin, early in June had a bitter editorial about
