San Francisco. July 1st 1887.
My dear Mrs Bidwell
We thank you for your kind invitation to Ohio. It came while I was away from home & therefore too late to be available But anyhow we could not have all left the old ranch at the same time No visit however could give me greater pleasure
I was so fortunate as to see the General the other day in full flesh & stature not diminished in the least & still full of [melonography & eriogonae.?]
The White cone of Shasta looms into the sky whenever I think of Ohio How many pleasant memories cluster about it
I am trying to close away the ranch
[in margin: Bidwell Papers Bancroft Library]
cares from my mind to write up some of my old notes for publication & I may have to visit Shasta again then I shall hope to see you I could run up for a short visit any time but dread the hot weather of the Sacram3nto. Little Wanda has never been further from home than Martinez, but she often tells me that when she is 12 yrs old she wants to go with me to the [While -big?] mountains & the waterfalls. Helen is only 16 months old & is very bright & interesting.
I often see Dr. Parry & through him hear of you.
With happy memories & best wishes I am ever truly your friend John Muir
