John Muir, Esq.

San Francisco, Cal.

Dear Sir:

With much pleasure I read your charming description of the “Yosemite Valleys” and therefore I desire your advice in the selection of the best locality in “Yosemite Valley”, to pitch my tent for several months, in order to paint some large pictures for the Worlds’ Fair and the Royal Art Gallery in Munich. I have traveled much in the Western Wilds, partly in the interest of Rail Road Cos., but chiefly to secure the unknown picturesque scenery for “The Great Western Album”, therefore “I can rough it”. The chief object is to have my headquarter in such a center in order to make my studies with convenience. If you kindly mention where you camped and where your cabin was located, you will confer me a great favor. I have a comfortable outfit and two pupils to assist me and will devote as many month necessary to study those harmonious tints you so beautifully described.

Also do me the favor the give me the names of some persons who reside in the valleys, to secure reliable directions. Hoping to make your personal acquaintance to interest you for “The Great Western Album Scheme”, I am fraternally,

Yours truly,

Carl C. Zeus.
