[letterhead] Nov. 14th, 1884Dear Friend MuirLast eve on return from SF to our hous in Alameda joyously confronted by a Box & the grevious fruit of the Vine- that best of all the [illegible]of kindly recollections on your part this is the [illegible] Now properly having our acknowledgement to another at the [illegible] of Mrs. [illegible] of the kingdom is away at Folsom Father sick [illegible] of paralysis - expect [illegible] soon but I take it upon myself to thank you on her [illegible], & of the occupants of the round table Hope also some day to have the like pleasure of yours in recprocating in kind - but any way think my best chance would be to send a Book the MS in the [main?] - 4 oto 2[illegible] [illegible] by yours truly "on the Redwoods now in the hands of the printer have not [illegible] the [illegible] who gets up the book since - but as I'm to C[illegible] = rest proof & [illegible] soon will - will secure you a copy - price D to [illegible] $[illegible]20 - if so ought to be rather stylish!
to be photographically illustrated - ought to have [illegible]in a note t[illegible]to you & especially that [illegible] description of [Ovid?] that could only refer to magazine - bhe provided to son in libraries & fill up day & date ok - Mrs. Harford without my [illegible]has know of my [illegible] was [repining?] over her loss of it the other day altho before moving she'd carefully - as she thot put it carefully aside among her relics & treasures. [illegible] Therefore if you will be so kind as to drop me a note of it I shall [thereby?] be able to supply it in the revised proof at least. if the afresaid fails Kindest regards to your wife & daughter and to the veneralbe old folks at home dont fail to give us a call when you come to the cityI keep steadily at owrk on my enterprise & report progress.
