[Fragment of letter of Mrs. Carr] [Probably Sept. 1872]
I took your Hetch Hetchy love to her today, and read her the letter, she lying with her head in ice, could enjoy and appreciate it. I have not read her any of your more recent letters for reasons. Sunday I went from Mrs. Moore's bedside to Harry Edwards', who has been brought over here for a change. Saw Harry eat his first meal in ten weeks, his feet tied up in a woolen rug, and his hands about twice their natural size -- just able to go through a feeble game of knife and fork. He is still a great sufferer from inflammatory rheumatism.
Allie and I walked out last night under the stars. Dr. Carr was in Sacramento. Ned delayeth his coming. John got back from his expedition with the clothes on his back, 'nothing more,' and looking all through the heavenly host not one was baleful, not one evil. Faint as the music of far off brooks in my green hills I heard,
"For God is God, my darling,
Of the night as well as the day."
Let the days shorten, let winter and grief draw nigh our dwelling; every mark of the dock's old torture is fair in the aftertime?
They all send their love, the sick and well, and give mine to Mrs. Hutchings.
Did you see that Dr. Jo. LeConte lectures on Monday evening week on the glaciers of the High Sierras, "advancing many new and interesting theories". Dr. Carr wondered if they were credited to their proper origin. We did not hear the lecture, which will be published.
