Yosemite, Apr. 15th.
Dear friend:
Your note of Feb. 14th with tidings of your sorrow has just reached me. You know that you have my innermost sympathy and I am glad to see that you so healthily and happily look upon death.
My own views concerning death have changed very much since I walked with Nature and i almost think of copying some thoughts for you from my note-book.
Mrs. Hutchings and I were speaking of death sorrows some time ago. She said that in her opinion those were the happiest who possessed the greatest number of large griefs. I wish that you were with us among these mountain powers; we would go to a shadowy place and have a glorious mingling of death thoughts, but I will not try to write. Farewell.
Ever your friend,
John Muir
