may your Wisconsin friends expect to see you-I should think, since the Pacific railroad was finished, there would be many more visitors-to the beautiful valley- -have you had the pleasure of meeting any of your friend-there as you expected.-I often read of parties being there-and think you may sometimes meet friends- your father has still the farm in his own hands-and intends hiring some one to help him with the work. -I have just received a letter from Danl he is well, and he intends returning to Avery about the first of April- that the Lord may bless you and keep you-at all times, is the earnest wish of your affectionate Mother

Dear John
I felt much pleased to read your welcome letter of 25 [illegible] it seems a long time since you wrote to me before-but I have often been told about you by the others of the family- I wrote to you about three months ago-and I have sent you a British messenger since that time-I very often think about you and wonder if you are nearly satisfied with the wonders of that wonderfull state Cala-I must tell you that our family meeting on Christmas day was much smaller than you suppose-Sarah with husband and children-and Anna and Joanna were all that could come-but all

our absent ones were affectionately remembered by all present, and the day was spent pleasantly- Joanna is teaching in Sarahs district this winter-so your father and I have been quite alone for some time-we have a hired girl to do the work- Dear John I hope your health is good-so that you will be able really, to enjoy and admire all the vast magnificence with which you are daily surrounded. I know it is far beyond any conception of mine-but we can unite in praising and serving our Heavenly Father-who is the maker and supporter of this- wonderful world on which we live for a time-but time is short-and we must live for ever-I trust we have a good hope through grace-of spending eternity in mansions of glory.

-everlasting, being redeemed through the blood of the Lamb that was slain for sinners - - about two weeks ago I went to Portage-and there met with Margt and Sarah and David M and received letters from you and Mary, and Anna and heard about Danl and Joanna. I told Sarah I felt truly thankful and happy to think I had news from every one of my widely scattered family-in one day- I assure you, I went home well satisfied-and your father received a letter from John Law giving us news from Crotland-he writes that his youngest son James is a Professor in the Cornell University at Ithaca New York-I think you will remember of seeing him-when you were little boys -- So you intend to prolong your stay in Cal-and when
