[Original letter returned to Miss M. Merrill] [Indianapolis, March , 1867] [To Miss Catharine Merrill]. I have been more than delighted with reading these precious Chalmer volumes. I have fairly lived on them two weeks. I am condemned by the physician to a dark room for same weeks, and should be glad to have you choose me another book, as I hope to be able to obtain a reader sometimes. I will make no apology for so long and so woeful a note, because I feel that you will understand and appreciate my feeling. JOHN MUIR [Envelope addressed Miss Catherine Merrill, care of Merrill & Co., Indianapolis. postmarked Indianapolis, July 12] [Letter evidently in wrong envelope, as this letter clearly was written in March of '67]
