Dear brother Daniel
I wish you a merry christmas and a happy new year when it comes; we expected [illegible] and [illegible]arah and her folks today but it is so rainy that I am afraid that they will not come which seems very strange for christ- mas for it is always very [illegible] and it is generally good [illebible] but if it rains much more the snow will be all gone but perhaps we are having our January than a little before the time. I received your letter of the 17th of Nov and was very glad that you had become so strong and

well so very fast and that you are no longer puny and pale. I know it was very naughty not to have wrote sooner but I have been going to school for a few weeks and I suppose though I had not time we have got a very good teacher after all not an Owen either so I intend to go just as steady as I can and learn as much as possible, and be as brave as possible about break- ing the [illegible] for I have got a pair of overshoes and am all rigged out for a regular glorious time [illegible] this winter for I am going to be a real good girl and be contented to go to school here instead of Portage or any where else for we have got a little more used to staying

up here by ourselves then we were when you went away first. We have commenced going to the [illegible] [illegible] every two weeks and would you believe it father is going to get a grand stove pipe hat from New York, dont you think you had better come home and see how he looks with it I suppose it will have the [illegible] effect of making him look quite preacherly. The apples have not lasted as long as you pro[illegible]- cied for father has just had to bring up two barrels from Portage I hope you will soon write and let us know how you get along now
From your affectionate sister Joanna
