[letterhead]

San Francisco, October 5, 1891.

My dear Mr Muir:

It has been repeated to me several times that you had intinated a disposition to take stock in the Overland Monthly and enter into some regular connection with it. Of course you may have been misquoted, and I have not said anything to you about it, because I have thought that if you really had such an idea, you would speak directly to me. Still, it seemed to me on the whole best not to let it pass without assuring you that such a connection would be agreeable to us, and much to be desired. We have in the past few months refused several offers backed by a good deal of money, because they were not satisfactory in other respects, so you will see that the money consideration is by no means foremost with us. As you know, I have asked for writing from you (and you promised it to me, too, nine years ago) until I grew ashamed to ask any more. Now that we are working up in illustration and outlook in every way, perhaps it will be more possible to prevail with you.

Very cordially yours,

Milicent W. Shinn.
