T. of Buffalo 24 Nov. 1861. Dear son John I received yours of the 18th Inst. I was glad to hear of your good health & welfare. also of your diligence in Study I pray you that you forget not eternity in midst of all your Studies. I entreat you to mind to do all that you do with an eye to eternity. & to mind that you have but one life to live & it may not be a long one. See ps. 39, 4-7 and Job 7, 6"my days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle. try to Spend your life So that upon reflection you will be happy by it. try to Spend your life as if your Salvation depended entirely upon your works. in doing all you can for the glory of god for your own good & the good of others. but at the Same time depend as much upon the merits of the Son of god, as if you had never done any thing instrumentally that could effect Salvation. your own good or the good of others - See that you trust entirely upon the promises of god through Jesus Christ to his penitent believers. and not to your good works as a believer which are only the fruits of the holy Spirit given you for christ's Sake. See my Son that all you do flow's from a heart filled with burning charity to god & his people and that would carry you to the ends of the world as upon the wings of an eagle. if in your power to do so, as an instrument for the benefit of dieing and immortal Souls. this charity can be got & kept, only by the gift of god. first by giving you to See the effects of the fall in your nature, & in your practice or actions, to be sin and death, that you may be deeply humbled in the sight of god, on account of your unworthiness by sin and rebellion, a gracious god having given you to see that Satan led man to this sin and misery. hath given you

to see also that in love to you & all manking he hath given his beloved son to bruise Satans head and make a way of escape for all from the bondage of sin and death to righteousness, Holiness, immortality, eternal life, & felicity infinite through Jesus Christ the only Saviour. A gracious god having give you to see all this, and your only dependence on Christ Jesus, you are led to cry out unclean unclean god be merciful to me a Sinner, to confess and forsake all your sins. having received so much grace by god's most holy word. you have got power to believe that you shall have mercy of god & that he will abundantly pardon you. this faith without which it is impossible to please god is productive of love, peace, joy, gentleness, meekness, long suffering, godliness, Faith, temperance etc. by the Holy ghost which is the gift of god throu Jesus Christ. if you have got possession of this heavenly charity it has been got as described by the grace of faith which worketh in you by love or charity. you love god because he first loved you, the love of god constraineth you to imitate Christ in his Sacrifices & Sufferings for the Salvation & happiness of mankind.
Secondly how you can keep yourself in the love of god & get an increase of it after having been born again of the spirit.. through the grace of god & having received a new nature & having got access to the fountain of life by prayer through you Lord Jesus Christ, your thirstly soul can ever feed abundantly and drink abundantly therefrom. & if you were ceasing to pray in faith it would be like ceasing to breath. the body would die, so would the babe born into the kingdom of god if it ceased to draw by prayer virtue through Jesus Christ from the fountain of life. you must pray without ceasing & in everything give thanks sensible of your inability to do anything for yourself you will see then the justice of giving god all the glory continually. & if you continue to follow the Spirit in Christ & do gods will only whatsoever ye ask of god in Christs name agreeable to his will it shall be given you, look for the answer to prayer. it may not come as you expect but it will come, if not while you live it will after & it may be sent though you know it not in time. the answers to your prayers will strengthen your faith more & more & your love & gratitude will increase also your joy & peace & etc. -follow the Spirit close & never doubt the ability of god though you or the creature cannot do anything. your affectionate father ever praying for you.
