Mr. John Muir,
Martinez, California.
My dear Muir:-
I am very much chagrined that this should be the first line you have had from me after leaving you at the Chicago Junction. I tried to get another interview with you at the Fair, but it was of no use. My engagements with Mrs. Johnson took me into other quarters at the time when I might have seen you. However, the Fair was no place for sociability, and as I only staid five days in all you can fancy that I had my hands full. I hope you enjoyed your additional time there, and that on your return you found Mrs. Muir and the children well and happy.
In a few days I will write you in regard to the Alaska article, to which I am giving attention, and perhaps in regard to the forestry question.
Mrs. Johnson was sorry not to meet you in Chicago, and I am, as ever,
Faithfully yours,
R. U. Johnson
