Purpose
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the unique experiences faced by African American and Hispanic women that contribute to diabetes burnout. The researchers focused on diabetes management, support and communication, access to resources and healthcare, and lifestyle factors. The researchers acknowledged how these factors may influence the ability to manage diabetes effectively. African American and Hispanic women have been disproportionately impacted by diabetes at higher rates compared to other groups, highlighting the health inequities that exist. The high prevalence of diabetes in these populations are influenced by the following: including health disparities, healthcare access, and being excluded from diabetes research. Understanding the barriers and factors that exist for these populations, can lead to health improvements at the individual, family, and healthcare level.
Methods
A quantitative study was conducted utilizing a 26 close-ended questionnaire. The researchers collected data from 24 African American and Hispanic women aged 25 to 65. The researchers utilized snowball sampling to recruit participants by placing English and Spanish flyers at Community Medical Centers Clinics and Instagram.
Findings & Conclusions
The results revealed three main themes including 1) importance of culturally specific materials and representation, 2) diabetes management, and 3) familial responsibilities.
- 62.5% of participants indicated their health care clinic does not provide culturally specific materials
- 29.2% of participants indicated “often” feeling overwhelmed or stressed about managing their diabetes and 25% indicated “always”
- Only 1 participant indicated that they never prioritize the needs of their children and/or family over their own needs
Recommendations
It is important for healthcare providers to understand the gaps and challenges faced by African American and Hispanic women living with diabetes. It is suggested for healthcare providers to provide culturally tailored resources, strengthen representation in healthcare settings, increase awareness in diabetes management, and enhance cultural competence.
