Dr. Wm F. Bade with compliments from William A. Magee [Publishe din Sierra Club Bulletin 21 (Feb 1936) 25-34 PERSONAL RECOLLECTION OF JOHN MUIR By William A. Magee Very happy personal recollections of John i-uir are mine because there was a waris and intimate friendship ana companionship between hi® and ay father. This began when they met in Yoseraite Valley in the Summer of 1871, while ray father and mother ware there. It was the beginning of a life-long friendship of these men, whose love of $&* .mountains drew them together on trips in and about Tosaraite, the Lake Taboe region, throughout California and to Sashin*?ton State and Alaska, on aftlty of which say brothers ard I were included. My earliest recollection of Mr. Muir goes back- to abuut 1S7S. At a dinnsr at ottr hosi-a fee asked as what I was going to do when 1 grew up. Wj reply was, "The real estate business with ray father." "Oh1*, he said, "then your father will have the sl^rx on his office changed from •Thorass Magee* to 'Thoraas ■oe & Son***. I thought'that iras what would happen, i'y fether said, "No, Muir, fc&« sign will be changed to read *Willie Magee and Father*". This reminds me that, as was the almost universal custom, they addressed each other by their last nates, although on the basis of close personal friendship, tl i j lit have been expected to speak' to each other by their first nar-es. Becentiy when introduced to Mr* Frank Swett of Berkeley, I at once asked nisi whether by any chance he wa© John Swett*s son. His ^aply was, "Yes, &;«d by any chance are you Thomas
