Memorials however hearty & sincere are often sadly in need of an able editor. [They are mostly colorless monotones of lamentation & praise afloat in [ ] [sensible] clouds personal feeling & of sight touch of the ground.]
This Catherine Merrill biographical material [book] so rich in history in seeming [ ] [ ] [ ] all embracing sympathy written warm as [ ] it should be written would be literature [ ] a cheering charming helpful book for everybody instead of one of those a colorless monotones of lamentation & stained praise so common nowadays [a]floating in [sensible] clouds of passing [passionate] feeling, out of sight & touch of all [the] literary world save [for] personal.
As far as I know you are the only man able to write this book.

Mary’s baby is of course a transcendental wonder. She actually toddles & talks, just think of it. If you doubt it ask May. Write me a long letter & let us know how you prosper now the plague cloud is gone & the sky of your lonely island [clear] once more.
Many thanks [ ]
God bless you
