every wave. Passing through the straits of Florida the wind died away & the sea became smooth as glass, & so clear were the waters I saw the bottom with startling distinctness as if riding over the ground in a wagon
Off Cape Hatteras the winds were loud & stormy & we had hard work beating up against it. Off Sandy Hook they carried snow & brought familiar sounds very welcome to me after a winter spent in Florida & Cuba without any true winter.
Architecture
The features of the Sierra landscapes grew as grows the grass. Crystallized beneath the heavy folds of overlying rocks perhaps a mile thick or more where in the darkness they lay awaiting development, like winter-bound gardens waiting for summer

The gl prd [glacier period] may almost be said to separate [almost wholly] the knowable from the unknowable in geological history, so great is the [difference] between the blurred foreshortened glimpses we may have into pre-glacial history

Avalanches See Postglacial denudation
1. Rocks loosened by earthquakes, rains frosts & other atmospheric agents
2 Landslips
3 dry mealy snow
4 crystalline snow periodical
5 century snow once in many years
3 mixture of snow, water, logs boulders etc
In one gap mound by Century ava [avalanche] 200 yds [yards] wide in upper Tuolumne Canon only one tree a noble silver-fir Abies magnifica withstood the onset.
Trees swept away by ava [avalanches] are mostly uprooted & crowded heads downward in close windrows along the sides of the clearing, also a few are carried on the [snout/snow] to where the avalanche terminates on the low ground of valleys meadows lakes etc analagous [analogous] to lateral & terminal moraines of glaciers
The pines lie with branches & needles drooped like wilted weeds. Soil if any, & loose stems are swept off leaving a bare scoured surface
