glaciers have pressed hardest. It should be seen in the morning with dew beads up on it the sun rays streaming level-irised. Here and there a gentian.
Many fine melicas in Yo [Yosemite] region.
Tallest grasses of the Sierras Triticeum, Brooms and Leersia.
The first is very abundant in P. [pinus] Contorta woods, in clumps along stream sides gurgling Lake beds, where the soil is rich, waving like [pines]. The deer hide in it, and squirrels [feed] like it’s too seeds & so do the chipmunk. Pleasant to see them cutting down the long stems they [chomp/snup] of head & carry it to the log & set on its hunches & [finger] [the] [head] as if playing on a flute.
[Browers] is very elegant in the lower pines waving finely in open clumps, out of the rich yellow green carpets of chamaebatia. Sunny and barred with shadows. Here and there a wild rose- white strawberry-like flowers, and a vine
Next a belt where are few grasses- then the dry short grass of the foothills. Soon yellow. Sedges mingled above, also beneath. Grass like luzula rushes. Juncus.
When ripen their flowers.
Few so disguised in even mosses.

Water Falls
Water and snow, avalanches. The same but with less slope. Small masses of snow falling.
Water first lying still, as drops, then flowing so also snow. Gradually dying like the Yosemite Creek.
Well may water sing and wave- be a good singer – born in motion, in grand currents of air. It is delightful to know that every rain cloud is a song cloud vocal with innumerable water falls. For every floating eddying particle gives forth definite tones, heard only by the ear of imagination. So also the Yosemite Falls teaches us the forms of wind cataracts.
Tracks:
[Plain] tracks are made when walking. Much finer than grasshoppers and seem to be backwards.
[Sketch of lizard tracks] tail score
