& [the divine idea shines out of them raying] radiate spiritual beauty [which the rocks & snow only] divine thought however covered & concealed by rock & snow. Mr. Delaney has hardly had time to ask me how I had enjoyed my trip though he has facilitated & encouraged my plans all summer & declares I’ll be [a great] famous [man] some day which seems strange to a wandering lover of wilderness with never a thought or dream of fame only humbly reverently hoping & trying to trace & learn & enjoy Nature’s lessons. [though I have no ambition at all in that direction & care only to learn & enjoy God’s thoughts.]

The camp stuff is now piled & packed on the horses, & the flock is headed for home [towards the river] & away we go down through the pine woods leaving the lovely lawn where we have camped so long. I wonder if I’ll ever see it again. The sod is so tough & close it is scarce at all injured by the sheep. They do not like the[is] silky glacier meadow grass. [preferring the tall succulent triticum that grows among the tow leaved pines on the deep broad fields of the moraine material.] The day is [was] perfectly clear, not a cloud or the faintest hint of a cloud in all the sky & there is [was] no wind. I wonder if in all the world, at a height of 9000 feet weather so steadily calm & bright, kind & hospitable can be found. We are [were] going away fearing destructive storms, though it is [was] difficult to conceive so great a weather change.

At the river though the water is [was] now low the usual difficulty occurred in getting the flock across. Every sheep seemed to be invincibly determined to die any sort of dry death rather than wet their feet. Carlo has learned the sheep business as perfectly as the

best shepherd & it was interesting to watch the intelligent efforts he made to push or frighten or encourage the silly creatures into the water. They had to be fairly crowded by main force over the bank, & when at last one crossed because it could not push a way
