Up through the [pine] woods [our] the hoofed [frightening the wild folk, especially the birds & squirrels, ants & grasshoppers] locousts [locusts] streamed beneath a cloud of brown dust. [trampling the dry forest pine needles into meal & raising a] [cloud like that which heralds the advance of an army]. Scarcely [how we] were they driven [them] a hundred yards from the old corral ere they [caught the idea of getting away & went rumbling on away] seemed to know that at last they were going to new pastures & ran wildly through brush & [over logs] over fallen trees & bowlders [boulders] in a ragged [tossing avalanche like an] leaping struggling mass like
