This force differs from magnetism cohesive attraction and electricity in being [exerted] at all distances and [ ] belonging to all bodies. It is exerted at all times at all distances on all matter invariably. We prove gravitation to be a property of all bodies by observation and reason for [s…ive] find that without exception it is a property of all bodies within our reach we justly conclude that it is a property of all bodies beyond our reach. The same reasoning applies to prove that it is the same for all kinds of matter. Cavandish [Cavendish] determined the density of the earth to be about 5-6 times as heavy as water. By means of a delicate torsion balance with heavy leaden balls suspend from the arms of it the attraction of these masses to two or three masses of lead was measured for by bringing a mass of lead near to each of the balls suspended at the
