70 Nov 13th Bright day [Fossills] 3 species in cliff 275 ft above plain Cliff beautifully ornate wavy lines of gray & red sand, like cornice to plain, tufts of eriogonum sage & grasses When returned, [Vernon] came in with head of M [mule] Deer. Shasta unclouded.
71 Nov 14th View from [Wild] Sheep Castle Looking N [north] Lava blocks [high] grass between on [scanty] [soil] a few cedars mahogany [larches] lupines sage & linosyris & phlox ribes A wide expanse of smooth gray plain sage covered & dotted lightly with junipers Then a calm [glaciary] lake so responsive to the sky in color & texture seems a sky itself. Surrounded by broad edges of meadow fine rich brown shooting out into the pale yellow & blue water plain in long picturesque promontories
